We touched on secondhand items back in laundry week, but now I want you to consider secondhand for everything else. Buying used stuff reduces product packaging, cuts new plastic production, and extends the life of plastic items that might otherwise end up in the garbage.
Today’s Challenge: Make secondhand your default for most purchases.
- Bookmark Craigslist and Freecycle.
- Join your local Facebook Marketplace and Buy Nothing Group
- Map out your nearest consignment and secondhand stores.
- Prepare yourself for garage sale season.
Most communities have a garage sale weekend when families band together to layout their unused wares to sell. You can make sure you are prepared by checking your kids’ shoe and clothing sizes, reviewing sports equipment, and keeping a list of things throughout the year that you are considering purchasing. If you are ready before you hit the streets, you will be less likely to come home with rubbish that you can’t return.
