Just like with human food, pet food and treats come in all sorts of plastic packaging. We can do better!
Today’s challenge: Search for the “naked” varieties of pet treats, bones, and even food. I don’t see any reason why a bone needs to be shrink wrapped in plastic. There are plenty of options out there that are plastic free, so make an effort to support these companies. For an extra challenge today, while you are searching for treats at the pet store, also look around to see if there is bulk pet food. Some pet shops and farm supply stores offer this option. I know you have to be careful of sourcing for dog food since contaminants can be toxic, but if you can find some bulk kibble from a reputable company, see if it is worth buying. You could also check out the canned food options since aluminum cans are more recyclable than plastic bags. My chicken feed comes in a paper bag and I reuse them for garbage bags, but they could also be recycled. Can’t find your favorite food in an environmentally friendly package? Look at Terracycle to see if they offer a recycling program for bags. At the time of this posting, Earthborn Holistics, Royal Canin, Open Farm, and Wellness all have free programs.
