You will begin to notice that a lot of plastic you amass arrives in your hands completely uninvited in the form of advertisements, freebees at a charity event, fun sized candy bars at businesses, straws, stickers, free samples in a store etc.
Today’s challenge: Practice refusing. A simple, “no thank you” will do. When you sit down at a restaurant, immediately tell the wait staff that you do not want a straw. You probably won’t see them again until they return with a glass of water, and by then it is too late. Another phrase I like to use is “Thanks, but not today”. This is useful when offered wrapped candy and advertisements. If you sign up for a charity event, make a comment that you would like to forgo the swag bag. This will all feel awkward at first, but the more you practice refusal, the easier it gets. Think of one plastic item that you will consistently refuse and practice saying “no thank you”. What are you going to challenge yourself to refuse?
