Throughout this challenge you are going to find that there are non-plastic alternatives to just about everything.  The zero waste community likes to call them “swaps”.  These alternatives are nice to have, but not always necessary.  Most of the time you can get away with eliminating a plastic product altogether, making something yourself, or repurposing what you already have.  However, sometimes it just makes sense to swap out a product, or maybe there is a really cool looking silicone bag you would like to try out.  Also, when you find your supply of common plastic items starting to run out, that is the time to search for an alternative.  You want to be prepared so that you don’t end up defaulting back to the products you are trying to avoid.  And you don’t want to overwhelm your pocketbook.  This is where a wish list comes in handy.

Today’s challenge: Start a wish list.  As I post each daily challenge, you can spend some time researching the swap and add it to your wish list if it isn’t something you are prepared to spend money on at the time.  Whether it is something you need or just want, add it to the wish list so that you have the exact items that you are looking for all in one place.  I like to make an excel spreadsheet with links to the exact item I am looking for, however I prefer to try to buy things locally or secondhand if I am able. You can also start a wish list on Earth Hero, which is a one stop shop for Earth-friendly products. On shopping days, you can look at the list to determine if there is something you want to purchase.  If you have someone ask you what you would like for a birthday, Christmas, etc. you will now be prepared to offer a suggestion!

Here is an easy product to get your list started.  Do you already have an item in mind that you would like to swap for a single use plastic?  Let me know in the comments.
