Today is day 3 of our dental routine examination. It is also the first day that we are going to look at single use plastic items in the bathroom. If you remember, single use items are those that we use just once and then toss. We’ll spend the rest of the week going through different bathroom items that fall into this category, starting with floss.
Dental floss may just be the most plastic-filled item in your bathroom. It is composed of nylon (plastic) covered with wax (petroleum based, like plastic), rolled up into a plastic container, then packaged in plastic to sell at the store. The ADA recommends flossing at least once per day to get rid of food and debris not removed by brushing. Flossing is essential to help prevent cavities and gum disease, which means we should not give up on floss just because it is plastic. Swap to a no-plastic version instead.
Today’s Challenge: Try this silk floss that comes in a glass bottle that can be refilled. If you still have a large supply of plastic floss (I’m talking to you Costco shoppers!), then finish what you have first and put this on your wish list.
