It’s day 2 of our dental routine examination and today we are taking a closer look at toothpaste. Toothpaste tubes are made from multiple types of plastic and usually have toothpaste still left in the tube when you are done. Both of these things make it nearly impossible to recycle the tubes. Just like with toothbrushes, over 1 billion tubes are thrown away every year. That is a lot of plastic waste.
Today’s Challenge: Try out a new way to scrub your teeth. Here are a few options that I have tried
- Toothpaste tablets: Comes in a bioplastic bag that is compostable. Chew and then start brushing to activate foaming action. I found that half a tablet was enough to get my teeth clean, but my husband uses a whole tablet. Doubles as a breath mint. Now also has a fluoride version.
- Tooth Powder: I am currently loving this product from LuSa Organics. There is enough mint and tangerine flavor to cover up the saltiness of the baking soda and the activated charcoal does a great job of whitening my teeth. Wet your toothbrush then dip it in the cardboard container and proceed to brush. Best not to share the same container with others to avoid spreading germs. Refills come in a paper bag.
- DIY: I’ve tried a couple of different recipes now, but they all contain baking soda and it was just too salty tasting for me. If you have a good recipe to share, I’d appreciate it.
- Recyclable tube: Since we drink filtered water, I still make sure my kids use fluoride toothpaste. Tom’s has been working on a fully recyclable tube that is now available. My kids like the Mango and Strawberry flavors. Both Tom’s and Colgate have programs with Terracycle for recycling.
