However you identify, let’s see what other plastic item in the bathroom we can attack today!

Today’s challenge: Investigate alternatives for gender specific personal products

Women: Yes, I am going to go there. Menstrual products are a large part of our bathroom waste and many of them are made from plastic. Tampons are often covered in a plastic wrap and have a plastic applicator. Pads are covered in plastic wrap and contain up to 90% plastic. Of course these are all single use items. National Geographic has a great piece on menstruation and the plastic conundrum. But don’t worry, there are definitely some solutions out there. One option is to switch to tampons with a paper wrapper and cardboard applicator. Natracare makes tampons and tampons both in compostable wrappers. To avoid single use products, you could also try a reusable tampons or tampons. You may find that it is much easier than you first imagined.

Men: (women can use this as a second challenge if desired) If you use disposable razors, consider switching to electric. You also will save money in the long run when you no longer purchase shaving cream or disposable razors. A safety razor is another option. This is how it was done before those disposables came around. I personally use one and find that the shave is much closer. A good lathering soap is necessary and care needs to be taken to avoid cutting yourself. Watch this video on how to use a safety razor.
