Today we continue in the bathroom with our personal care products. Once you’ve pared down your cosmetics and tried a few different DIY projects, you may need to head back to the store to keep up with your personal care needs. This is the time to start searching for products that are dispensed in plastic-free packaging.

Today’s Challenge: Look for beauty products in glass, aluminum, or cardboard packaging. Lip products are probably the easiest to find. Even some mainstream companies put their glosses and tints in metal tins. Overall, cosmetic and skin care products in sustainable packaging can be really hard to find, but here are a few that I’ve come across:

  • Qet Botanicals: My favorite! Made in Wisconsin and California, this company uses fresh, non-toxic ingredients to make small batches of skin care products. They use glass and aluminum bottles (the tops are plastic though). A lot of their free samples come in glass bottles too so you can feel better about trying products and then have a little bottle that is perfect to reuse for travel.
  • Meow Meow Tweet: Masks, skin serums, deodorant, hair products, and more. Most products are packaged in glass or cardboard boxes
  • Elate Cosmetics: All sorts of make-up, including foundation. This is on my list of products to try. They are very clear about what is in the packaging. Most products are in glass or bamboo, but there is some plastic in a few items.
  • Plaine Products: Face, hair, and body products all in refillable aluminum containers. When you empty a container you can send it back (no charge) and order a replacement.
  • River Organics: Concealer, blush, bronzer, highlighter, lip colors, and mascara all in recyclable, compostable cardboard containers.
