Yesterday you worked on planning meals. Now let’s prepare for shopping. I usually like to do this at the same time as when I pick out my meals for the week, but it’s not always possible when there are time constraints.
Today’s challenge: Make your shopping list
- Gather the recipes for your weekly meals and make out a grocery list.
- If there is a store that you frequently shop, then have their weekly flyer on hand at the time when you make your list so that you know what is on sale and can write that item down.
- I like to separate my list into sections of the store. Produce, bulk, dairy, meat, grocery, deli, bakery. That way when I am at the store I only have to look at the section that I am in and I’m less likely to forget something.
- Write down only what you need
The key to reducing plastic is that when you shop, you do not stray from the list. Trust me on this one. I cannot tell you how many times I have come home with bags of chips, ice cream, random snacks, and large quantities of items on special when I didn’t stick to the list. All of it is in plastic packaging, all of it is unhealthy, and ultimately a lot of it ends up in the garbage since I didn’t have a plan for it and it got shoved to the back of the cupboard! Does this sound familiar to you?
