You might not realize it, but even your everyday kitchen sponge is probably made of plastic.  They don’t last very long, harbor bacteria, and end up in the garbage.

Today’s challenge: Switch to a sponge made from natural materials.  There are a lot of new items available these days that are compostable.  I like Skoy brand for both cleaning my dishes and wiping down counters.  When I’m done with a cloth, I cut it up into pieces and toss in the compost. Not only are the products plastic free, but the packaging is plastic free as well.  I love it! Others swear by these Swedish Dish Clothes which are similar.

If you currently use one of those dish brushes with a sponge on the end, try out this natural dish brush instead. It works great without the plastic!

And if you have a tougher job that needs a good scour – try these scour pads made from coconut husks.

So many plastic-free options here!

This week we have covered the following items in your kitchen:

  • Disposable kitchen ware
  • Zip top bags
  • Plastic wrap
  • Plastic food containers
  • Beverage bottles
  • Straws
  • Sponges

These are the most common plastic items in the kitchen and many of them are single use disposables.  If you have committed to changing even just one, that is huge!  I’m not expecting that everyone can make all of these changes at once.  You have your notebook and wish list for a reason – setting goals and planning for the future.  It takes a while to get set up and integrate changes into your daily living.  Are you still with me, or did I scare you off?
