I debated including straws as part of this challenge. This is an issue that has been hyper covered in the media and is now totally politicized. But straws are also a common plastic item that most people have in their homes. And the truth is, plastic straws are a problem (see yesterday’s challenge for the top 5 items found in coastal cleanups). Remember that picture of the turtle with a straw stuck up its nose (warning the video is a little hard to watch so you might want to sensor if you have sensitive kiddos)? That type of plastic damage to wildlife is real. Let’s put a stop to it!
Today’s challenge: Check out your straw supply at home. Maybe this is something you can eliminate all together from your house and maybe not. I keep some around for when my kids get sick, but otherwise we all drink straight from a glass. If you use straws in your home, then look into reusable options for when you run out of your plastic supply. You can find them in glass, stainless steel, and bamboo. For parties, try compostable paper straws. Check out your options and add one to your wish list.
