You spent the past four days figuring out what you can recycle and where. Now it is time to put your recycling into action by setting up a station in your home to make separation easier. Use those cardboard boxes that you started collecting last week.
Today’s challenge: Here are the actionable items for you to complete today
1 – For each Terracycle brigade that you signed up for, label a box with that product. Label another box for plastic bags and one for electronic waste. While you are at it, set aside a box for donations. This may seem silly to have to go through this process for all of these individual items, but remember this step is to help you transition to a life with less plastic. It is going to take time to go through what you have already amassed and change your buying habits. It is up to all of us to recognize where our waste is coming from and dispose of it properly. You can also use this for some of your guilty pleasure items
2 – Find a place in a pantry, closet, garage, or basement to store boxes neatly. I find it works best to put the boxes on a shelf near my curbside blue recycling container in my garage. If you live in an apartment, you may need to limit the number of collection boxes, or just use small boxes.
3 – Now, you have to make sure that these boxes eventually get emptied. Set a monthly reminder on your phone or calendar to check the recycling and see what needs action. When you are ready, you can request a free shipping label from Terracycle for the programs that you signed up for. Tape it right on the box you used for collection. Then make sure on errand day you drop off boxes for shipping, take bags to the grocery store, or stop in to Subaru to transfer to their collection boxes. You will also need to remember to replace the box to begin collecting again.
